Emerging Needs Initiative

Given the needs and challenges our community was facing, the Asian Pacific Fund launched a two-year Emerging Needs Initiative focused on addressing the most pressing emerging needs in the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community. We partnered with the San Francisco Foundation and Blue Shield of California Foundation to the cohort of grantees listed below for year-one. In 2020, like the rest of the country and world, we shifted our priorities to address the devastating impact of COVID-19. Learn about our COVID-19 Response Fund grantees.

GRANTEE PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS & YEAR-ONE FUNDING

AAAJ-Asian Law Caucus — $20,000 to provide legal and technical support to the Bay Area API community for Census and redistricting.

AACI — $20,000 to support their Senior Wellness Program, connecting seniors to culturally and linguistically appropriate health and social services, and reducing social isolation of older adult APIs to age well, independently and with dignity in their community.

Asian Health Services — $25,000 for activities to reach hard-to-count (HTC) APIs in Alameda County for Census and to advocate for vulnerable APIs against the Public Charge Rule.

Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach — $20,000 for their API Youth Anti-Violence Program addressing teen dating violence (TDV), targeting high-risk and immigrant API youth in Alameda and San Francisco counties.

Asian Women’s Shelter — $20,000 for voter engagement, Census outreach efforts and to advocate for more culturally responsive domestic violence services at local and statewide levels to build a safety net for immigrant, refugee and other non-citizens of violence.

Chinatown Community Development Center — $25,000 to maximize Census participation by using an existing network of residents at SRO properties, social media and computer sessions on filling out the Census form. Grassroots leadership training will target the network built from Chinese speaking Census volunteers.

Chinese for Affirmative Action — $25,000 to educate Chinese community members on an array of issues including Census, immigration, inclusion, compassion and equity by training Peer Leaders from HTC Chinese immigrant communities, developing culturally relevant digital content in-language, and organizing traditional and digital media activities.

Chinese Progressive Association — $25,000 for educating and engaging low-income Chinese immigrant families on the role of Census with door knocking, workshops and a street outreach program. Develop the leadership of Chinese immigrants and youth to educate them on key issues including housing, public safety, immigration, and voter engagement.

Community Health for Asian Americans — $20,000 to support populations of Burmese, Cambodian, Laotian, Mien, Nepali, Tibetan, Thai and Vietnamese in the East Bay to stay healthy with education, translated materials, support groups, trainings, legal referrals, interactive trauma-informed community workshops and theater performances on topics such as “Rapid Response” and “Know your Rights.”

Community Youth Center of San Francisco — $20,000 for Census Outreach in SF’s Bayview District, leadership development with Asian newcomer youth, and investing in a Learning Manager to provide year round training to staff and career development to stabilize staff retention.

Filipino Advocates for Justice — $20,000 for Census outreach, education and Census messaging during phone banking for the 2020 primaries. FAJ will engage community members to defend worker, immigrant, and renter’s rights, Public Charge, and other civic engagement issues.

Friends of Children with Special Needs — $25,000 to support Census outreach and education efforts. Grant will also support referral services to distressed parents in need of mental health services, respite care, mentorship, and parent/sibling support groups.

Gum Moon — $20,000 to support Census education, filling out Census forms assistance, and bilingual workshops on Public Charge, Know Your Rights, and how to advocate for the vulnerable API community. Funding will also support increased hours for a fundraising consultant.

Korean American Community Services — $20,000 for Census outreach activities, seminars covering voter education, voter rights, voter registration, citizenship classes, and citizenship application assistance for Koreans in Santa Clara County.

Korean Community Center of the East Bay — $20,000 for participation in a six CBO collaborative for Census hard-to-count API residents in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Grant will also support services for Korean seniors’ mental health and wellness with culturally appropriate mental health engagement models and tools to destigmatize mental health issues, relieve stress and reduce social isolation.

Maitri — $20,000 for domestic violence survivors programs including crisis intervention, counseling, risk of harm assessments, housing assistance, legal services, court accompaniment, and translation in 15 South Asian languages.

North East Medical Services — $30,000 to support Census outreach with language assistance, workshops, and kiosk assistance for patients filling out forms with no internet access. Grant also supports translating NEMS Health Education materials into Vietnamese, Tagalog and Spanish and a Breast Cancer Screening video translated into Vietnamese and Hindi.

Southeast Asian Community Center — $20,000 for Census outreach, Census education, assistance filling out Census forms online and on paper, and workshops on Immigrants’ Rights and Needs.

Vietnamese American Community Center of the East Bay — $20,000 for Census education and outreach to Southeast Asians and other smaller refugee/immigrant communities in East Oakland, assistance filling out Census forms, and citizenship application assistance.
