Fiona’s Story

“I didn’t know anything about America. I had no relatives or friends there. I relied on my husband for money and had to stay at home. We argued so much. He beat me. Someone at my church told me about the Asian Women’s Shelter. When I first saw the house, I thought, ‘Wow it feels so safe, so warm, so comfortable.’ For me, Asian Women’s Shelter is like a lighthouse in the middle of the sea of darkness. I can see the light, the hope.”

Fiona, Asian Women’s Shelter

21% of Asian women in the U.S. report experiencing intimate physical and/or sexual violence, but it is likely much higher than this. For Fiona, she was able to find safety and security at Asian Women’s Shelter, an organization committed to every person’s right to live in a violence-free home with a specific focus towards addressing cultural and language needs.

The Asian Pacific Fund works with a network of more than 80 Bay Area organizations, including Asian Women’s Shelter, who provide vital services to our most vulnerable Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Our affiliate partners address pressing needs of our community such as poverty and unemployment, mental health, education and youth development, access to health care and legal services, and civic engagement.
