Combating a Climate of Fear: Addressing Emerging Needs in the Bay Area Asian and Pacific Islander Community

SAN FRANCISCO (Feb. 20, 2019) — Asian Pacific Fund, a community foundation, announced its inaugural API Summit that will bring together leaders from foundations, businesses, government and media to address hidden and emerging needs within the Bay Area Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community. The Summit will be an illuminating one-day convening that will highlight new data and various approaches in engaging the API community.

“For the past 25 years, Asian Pacific Fund has been committed to raising funds to support our most vulnerable Asians and Pacific Islanders in the Bay Area,” said Audrey Yamamoto, president and executive director at Asian Pacific Fund. “Collaboration with foundations, businesses, donors and our network of 70 nonprofits has always been an essential factor in our ability to successfully meet the needs of our community. We are excited to bring together so many leaders for our first API Summit to not only inform but inspire conversations that will ultimately result in more support for our community.”

The API Summit will be held at the Commonwealth Club on May 8, 2019. Participants will hear from community nonprofits that are part of the Fund’s 70+ network of affiliates for an in-depth analysis of needs they are confronting on the frontlines such as the housing crisis, an increase in mental health and domestic violence cases and uncertainty around immigration. They will also have the opportunity to hear from prominent speakers including Thuy Vu (KQED) and Cathy Cha (Evelyn & Walter Haas, Jr. Fund).

“This is a timely event, given the myriad challenges confronting the health of the Bay Area’s API communities,” said Fatima Angeles, vice president of programs at The California Wellness Foundation, a sponsor of the Summit. “Cal Wellness is pleased to help convene this roster of top leaders and thinkers at the API Summit to address these vital issues.”
