Cyclone Relief in Burma

Cyclone Nargis hit Burma on May 2, resulting in 80,000 fatalities and more than 55,000 missing, according to the BBC. The United Nations reports that shelter and access to clean drinking water are priorities for the survivors.

If you would like to help the Burmese people recover from this disaster, we suggest giving to the organizations listed below that have existing ties to local Burmese groups like monasteries and charities. These organizations are already working to provide food, clean water, medicine and supplies to those in need.

Charitable Alliance of Burmese Americans and
the B.K. Kee Foundation

The members of the Charitable Alliance of Burmese Americans (CABA) and the B.K. Kee Foundation are originally from Burma, and they have close relationships to people and workers in the affected areas. The entire amount of your donation will go toward the neediest Burmese people, and supplies will be distributed through trusted local Burmese friends and colleagues.

Donations to CABA will be matched by the B.K. Kee Family Foundation, up to the amount of $100,000. The B.K. Kee Family Foundation is a private family foundation established to provide humanitarian aid, primarily in health and education, to all people of Burma. It hopes to address the needs of the people of Burma that have not been widely recognized or adequately addressed by the international community.

Foundation for the People of Burma

The Foundation for the People of Burma (FPB) supports locally-run projects in health, education and leadership development. FPB provides humanitarian aid to Burmese people of all ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs. It responds to the basic needs of communities inside Burma and of Burmese refugees in Thailand and India.

Earthquake Relief in China

A powerful earthquake hit southwestern China on May 12, and it and subsequent aftershocks have resulted in nearly 70,000 dead and more than 350,000 people injured. Millions of earthquake survivors are now homeless and without food and clean water. If you would like to help the Chinese people recover from this disaster, we suggest giving to the organizations listed below that are already working in the affected area to provide shelter, drinking water, medical supplies and medicine to those in need.

Oxfam America

Oxfam America and its colleagues are assisting earthquake survivors in remote rural areas. Oxfam has teams working in nine locations in Sichuan and Gansu provinces to provide relief and assist with rehabilitation efforts.

Oxfam is working closely with the Civil Affairs Department, the Poverty Alleviation Office, and several mainland-based non-governmental organizations. Oxfam America envisions a just world without poverty, and is committed to creating lasting solutions to poverty, hunger and social injustice.

Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres

Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has pre-packaged medical kits to dispatch to devastated areas immediately following a natural disaster like a major earthquake. has worked in China since 1988. MSF distributes clean drinking water and provides medical care and supplies, and mental health counseling.

MSF teams have been working with the Chinese Red Cross and other local health authorities to assess additional needs in the large affected area. MSF has worked in China since 1988, and currently has 23 staff members in the region.
