2007-2008
Health Education Childhood Obesity in Asian Communities

Childhood obesity has been a growing problem in the U.S., even for Asian communities. The percentage of Asian American kids in California who are at risk of becoming overweight has risen faster over the past 10 years than for any other ethnic group. This means that early intervention and health education are important, since being overweight puts people at risk for many health problems, like diabetes and asthma.

2006-2007
Citizenship and Naturalization Services

Seventy percent of Asians living in the Bay Area were born outside the U.S., and many of them applied for U.S. citizenship this year due to heightened concerns about the immigration reform proposals discussed in Congress. The Asian Pacific Fund supported naturalization services and citizenship classes in response to this increase in demand. Grants covered the costs of legal services, ESL classes to pass the naturalization interview, and also provided financial assistance to help elderly and low-income immigrants pay for the large fee increases that took effect in July 2007.

Grant Recipients:
Cambodian Community Development, Inc. (Oakland) -- $18,000
Chinese Newcomers Service Center (San Francisco) -- $18,000
Vietnamese Voluntary Foundation (San Jose) -- $14,000
