About the 2010 Theme:

Expectations: To be and do what you feel in your heart

Brainstorming What to Draw and Write

Here are some questions to help you think about the theme. Please note: These are ideas to help you get started. Your entry does not have to answer any one of these questions, nor all of the questions, but it should address the contest theme.

  • How do you set your goals? Do people think there are certain things you should do? Are there things you know you can do even though others say you cannot?
  • Goals are very important because tehy are one way that we decided what is important to us and how we find out what we do well. Goals can help us learn to enjoy having a challenge and working hard.
  • Even though we should be able to choose our own goals, sometimes people have expectations. For example, if you are very tall, they think you should play basketball.
  • Some goals are for a group of people, not just one person. How are goals set for a group of people? If you are part of a team or are working on a project with other students at school, or if your family or friends are working together on a project, how do you set goals?
  • How are diversity and your own skills and talents part of setting goals?
  • Do you think setting goals is different or the same of you are Asian?

Ideas for Art, Essays, or Poems

For Elementary School Students

  • Describe a goal that you have. How was this goal set? Did you choose this goal yourself or did someone choose it for you?
  • How do you plan to reach your goal, or have you already reached it?
  • Do you or your friends or other people you know expect you to have certain goals because you are Asian, or is it the same for all children?
  • Does diversity matter when choosing a goal?
  • Have you ever had a goal that you shared with other people, something you worked on together?
  • Do you think kids from the same ethnic group work better together? Do kids from different backgrounds work better together? Does it not make any difference?
  • Draw a picture of a time when your tried to reach an important goal or when you were successful reaching a goal.
  • Is there something special about you, a friend or someone in your family that makes it possible for your to reach your goal?
  • What is it like to live up to your family's expectations for you?

For Middle School and High School Students

  • How do you set your goals? Do people think there are certain things you should do? Are there things you know you can do even though others say you cannot?
  • Have your goals changed since you were a young child in elementary school? What happened that made your goals change?
  • Are expectations different if you are a girl or a boy? Is that fair?
  • When you work in a team, how are the goals set?
  • Does diversity matter when you are working in a team or when setting goals, whether they are individual goals or goals for a group?
  • Describe or draw a picture of a time when you overcame someone's perception of you.
